Sculptor, mainly of animals. Born 9 June 1901 at South Woodford, Essex, son of a painter. Studied at Goldsmiths' College, the Central School 1917–19 and the R.A. Schools 1919–20. Won the Rome Prize 1924 and married Barbara Hepworth in Florence the same year. First one-man exhibition (with Barbara Hepworth) at Alex Reid & Lefevre, Glasgow, 1928. Member of the 7 & 5 Society 1932; London Group 1928–34. Official War Artist 1940–5. Worked in Mexico 1949–50. A.R.A. 1950, R.A. 1960. Taught sculpture at the R.C.A. from 1948 and was Professor of Sculpture 1953–9. Author of Animal Drawing 1936, How to Draw Horses 1941, and The Big Tree of Mexico 1952.
